About this course

Participants work as an ensemble on jazz tunes and arrangements, with the pace adapted to the group. Sessions address instrumental control, tone, articulation, accuracy, rhythm, harmony, form and the application of theory in performance. The course also explores improvisation through scales, modes and patterns, alongside repertoire analysis and interpretation. Individual parts are developed within the context of the overall ensemble sound, with attention to listening, communication, rehearsal practice and stage presence. Learners set personal goals and reflect on their progress, while practical performance in class informs tutor assessment. There may also be opportunities for public performance.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for experienced musicians working at an intermediate level. Learners need intermediate knowledge of jazz theory and sight-reading ability, and should be prepared to contribute to ensemble rehearsals as well as individual instrumental work. A final session may involve performing in a cross-college jazz concert.

• Level 1 literacy is an advantage
• The course may include a concert performance outside the usual class setting
