RJS Jazz – Short and Sharp-Intensive

About this course

The course develops jazz musicianship through ensemble-based work, combining rehearsal and performance with study of theory, practice methods and improvisation. Participants explore composition and arranging for small and medium-sized groups, apply jazz theory, and work with common ensemble repertoire. The course also considers ways of presenting and promoting musical work within the local and wider jazz scene. Learning is not formally assessed, but participants can set individual goals and reflect on their development. Performance opportunities may arise through college activities, local venues or a cross-college jazz event.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginner-level jazz players who are developing beyond absolute beginner study. It involves ensemble rehearsal and performance, so learners should be able to read music sufficiently to work through jazz song charts and have a reasonable grasp of scales and common chord progressions using seventh and other four-note chords.
