About this course

The course develops a practical approach to jazz vocal performance. Participants work on form and song structure, sing with other musicians, communicate within an ensemble and examine recordings by classic vocalists. Sessions also address awareness of the voice, repertoire development and establishing a structured practice routine. Learners set individual goals and reflect on their development, while progress is observed through practical classwork rather than formal assessment. Performance opportunities include college concerts, events and a weekly open mic session.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for improver-level singers who can already sing some songs, although these do not have to be jazz songs. Some appreciation of pitch is expected, while music theory knowledge is useful rather than essential. Level 1 literacy is important because handouts are provided.
