RJS – Jazz Workshop 1

About this course

The workshop develops jazz playing through ensemble work, jamming and improvisation rather than preparing for a polished final performance. Participants explore jazz standards, contemporary tunes and original music while working on reading notation, playing by ear, chords, scales, harmony and rhythm. Teaching combines practical group playing with tutor-led discussions, individual feedback and experimentation with different musical approaches. Optional work between sessions can include listening exercises, composition or solo preparation. The course also introduces composing as part of the learning process.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for instrumentalists and singers at a beginner level, although it is not designed for complete beginners. Participants need to be able to read music at least a little and should be prepared to work collaboratively in an ensemble. There is no requirement to perform at the end of the course.
