About this course

The course develops ensemble performance through rehearsing standard tunes and arrangements in different group sizes and combinations. Sessions combine tutor demonstrations, individual exercises, group work and personalised feedback. Content includes instrumental technique, jazz theory, improvisation, repertoire, performance skills and approaches to planning practice routines. Participants work with the tutor to identify goals and reflect on their development. Progress is considered through practical class activities rather than formal assessment.

What you'll learn

  • Perform standard jazz tunes and arrangements within different ensemble combinations.
  • Apply jazz theory in repertoire and ensemble performance work.
  • Use improvisation within a jazz ensemble setting.
  • Develop instrumental technique and ensemble performance skills.
  • Plan practice routines and strategies for continued development.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for intermediate-level jazz players, with the provider describing the group as suited to upper-intermediate musicians. It involves ensemble playing in changing group combinations, alongside individual exercises and demonstrations. Intermediate jazz theory knowledge is useful, while intermediate sight-reading is required. Level 1 literacy is an advantage for working with the course handouts.

  • There is no formal assessment; learning and progress are considered through practical class work.
  • The final session may take the form of a cross-college jazz concert evening.
