RJS – Saxophone Intermediate

About this course

The course develops jazz saxophone playing through study of established performances, styles and saxophonists, alongside work on theory, rhythm, improvisation and aural skills. Learners use transcription to inform their playing, extend their repertoire and refine instrumental technique. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations with audio, books and printed music. Regular Saturday lunchtime student jam sessions provide opportunities to apply the course material in an ensemble. Learners also identify individual goals and receive feedback on their development through practical classwork.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate players who already have experience playing jazz saxophone in an ensemble or group and are comfortable with the technical demands of their instrument. Learners should understand the practical application of jazz theory, make time for practice between classes and be prepared to perform in group jam sessions.

• Learners must be aged 19 or over by 31 August before the course starts
• Previous jazz saxophone experience in an ensemble or group is required
• Level 1 literacy is advantageous because handouts are distributed during the course
• The course includes regular ensemble performances at student jam sessions

• Learners are expected to set aside time for practice between classes
• The final session may take the form of a cross-college jazz concert evening
