About this course

Participants work together on repertoire linked to RHACC Open Mic themes, exploring song structures, arrangements and a range of popular music styles. Practical workshops and guided rehearsals develop ensemble techniques, listening, timing, stagecraft and musical communication. Collaborative performance projects are supported by tutor feedback, with preparation for a public performance forming part of the course. Progress is monitored through rehearsal contributions, participation, developing skills and performance preparation rather than formal examinations.

What you'll learn

  • Apply ensemble techniques when rehearsing and performing with other musicians.
  • Interpret song structures and contribute to repertoire arrangements.
  • Use listening, timing and musical communication skills in group performance.
  • Recognise stylistic features across a range of popular music styles.
  • Prepare repertoire and stagecraft for a live public performance.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for musicians beyond the complete-beginner stage. Participants should understand basic song structures, chords and rhythms, and be performing at post-beginner or intermediate level. It involves collaborative rehearsals, performance projects and preparation to perform publicly. Guitarists and bass players are particularly encouraged, while drummers, keyboard players, vocalists and other instrumentalists are also welcome.

  • Not suitable for complete beginners.
  • Requires active participation in group rehearsals and collaborative performance work.
  • Includes preparation for performance at an RHACC Open Mic event.
