Samanids (819-999), Ghaznavids (977-1186) and Ghurids (786-1215): the great dynasties of Central Asia

About this course

This study day traces the political development of the Samanids, Ghaznavids and Ghurids from the late ninth to the early thirteenth century. It considers the Samanids’ rule from Bukhara, the Ghaznavids’ emergence from the Samanid military structure, and the Ghurids’ challenge to Ghaznavid power from Afghanistan. Teaching combines prepared talks with PowerPoint slides and opportunities for questions and discussion. The course also examines how imperial symbols, including capitals, buildings and art, were used politically, alongside critical and visual analysis of historical material.
