About this course
Participants work with black and white negatives in a darkroom, practising the core stages of making prints. The course covers photograms, test strips, contact sheets and printing on multi-contrast resin-coated paper using filters, alongside dodging and burning. Demonstrations are followed by active practice, with learners working at their own pace and developing techniques appropriate to their experience. More experienced printers can explore advanced approaches while reviewing exposure, contrast and prints for further refinement.

Is this course right for you?
The workshop is intended for beginners as well as learners with previous black and white printing experience. Its mixed-level format allows participants to work at an appropriate pace, with more experienced printers able to explore advanced techniques.
Before you go
- Participants need to bring their own black and white negatives for printing.
- Black and white printing paper is required and can be purchased in the darkroom on the first day.
- Anyone wishing to process black and white film during the course should notify the provider in advance.
