What Beginner (A1) Italian means

At A1 Italian, learners are beginning to use familiar words and simple sentences in predictable everyday situations.

  • Introduce yourself

Mi chiamo Anna. Abito a Londra.

My name is Anna. I live in London.

  • Order in a café

    Vorrei un caffè, per favore.

I would like a coffee, please.

  • Ask for directions

    Scusi, dov’è la stazione?

Excuse me, where is the station?

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course develops foundational Italian through structured work with Dieci A1 alongside conversations, role-plays, speaking tasks, pair and group activities, and cultural material. Learners practise introducing themselves, exchanging personal information, ordering food, making reservations, describing homes and cities, and asking for or giving directions. Language work covers common present-tense verbs, articles, nouns and adjectives, negation, prepositions, and expressions such as c’è and ci sono. The teacher may adapt the selection and order of material to the group, using selected content from the coursebook rather than covering every page.

What you'll learn

  • Introduce yourself and others, and exchange basic personal information in Italian
  • Use common present-tense regular and irregular verbs in simple communication
  • Order food and drinks, express preferences, and make a restaurant reservation
  • Describe homes, cities and places of interest using basic vocabulary
  • Ask for and give directions in everyday situations

Is this course right for you?

This course is designed for adults with no previous knowledge of Italian. It suits learners who want to move through beginner material at a faster pace and take part in regular spoken communication, role-play, pair work and group activities.

  • No previous Italian experience is required
  • The programme combines three beginner levels in one focused course
  • Learners should be comfortable with a faster pace than a gradual evening-course format

Before you go

  • The Dieci A1 coursebook, covering Units 0–5, is required from the second lesson and must be purchased separately.
