Saturday Printmaking: Collagraph on Cardboard

About this course

Participants develop collagraph plates and produce prints, exploring how different textures can shape an image and contribute to an individual visual language. The course combines group demonstrations with one-to-one teaching, allowing learners to receive guidance while developing their own project during the latter part of the course. Printing methods include both intaglio and relief approaches. Learners with previous printmaking experience can extend their practice through personal projects and may combine collagraph with drypoint or carborundum.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners, and no previous printmaking experience is necessary. An interest in, or experience of, drawing or design may be useful. Learners with some prior experience can use the course to revisit and extend printmaking techniques through a personal project.

• Some printmaking processes and presses require a small degree of physical strength
• The class includes demonstrations, individual guidance and independent project development

Before you go

• Participants should bring flat found textures, cardboard packaging, pencils, assorted paintbrushes, a sketchbook or notebook, and a portfolio for taking finished prints home.
• Participants should bring their own apron and marigold gloves. Safety goggles are provided.
• The course fee includes most basic studio consumables, but participants need to obtain paper and items such as etching plates or lino blocks.
• Health and safety guidance is provided, and participants may be asked to confirm that they will follow the advised procedures.
• Some printmaking chemicals may require precautions during pregnancy. The tutor can advise on this.
• There is no wheelchair access to the print studio. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
