Saturday Printmaking: Drypoint and Carborundum

About this course

Participants explore drypoint mark-making with sharp tools and sandpapers, alongside carborundum techniques for producing painterly textures, tones and depth. They develop an individual project using one or both processes and print the resulting plates through intaglio methods, including registration for multiple layers. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations and group discussions with individual guidance and technical or critical feedback. Learners set personal goals with the tutor and review them through Individual Learning Plans, while discussions address both technical processes and creative decisions.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners as well as learners with some previous printmaking experience who want to renew or extend their knowledge. An interest in, or experience of, drawing or design may be useful. Participation includes tutor-led demonstrations, group discussion and individual project guidance.

• No previous printmaking experience is necessary.
• Learners returning to or extending existing printmaking knowledge are also supported.
• An interest in, or experience of, drawing or design may be useful.

Before you go

• Learners should bring pencils, a range of brushes, palette knives and a sketchbook or notebook.
• Protective clothing is provided, but clothing that can tolerate mess is advisable.
• Most studio consumables, including ink, cleaning materials and solvents, are included. Learners must obtain paper and etching plates or lino blocks.
• Health and safety procedures are explained during the course, and learners must sign an agreement to follow them. Some chemicals may be harmful in pregnancy or irritating for people with sensitivities.
• The print studio is not wheelchair accessible and is located on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
