Sculptural life drawing

About this course

The life model provides a reference point for investigating how drawing can become three-dimensional form. Demonstrations introduce materials including wire, clay slip and casting media, while practical sessions develop translations of 2D studies into sculpture. Participants also explore drawing into metal plates, casting from these surfaces and making monoprints. Teaching combines demonstrations, individual feedback, group discussion and practical work. The course encourages an experimental approach to combining drawing and sculpture, with scope for learners who already have a creative practice to investigate new methods.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for complete beginners and does not require previous experience. Learners with an existing creative practice are also welcome to use the sessions to explore new approaches to life drawing and the move from 2D to 3D work. Participation includes practical activities, group discussion and one-to-one feedback.

Before you go

• All materials required for the course are provided.
• Bring a sketchbook, pencils and a pen for sketching and note-taking.
• A camera or smartphone may be useful for documenting work in progress.
• Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Old clothes or overalls are strongly recommended because some materials may stain or damage fabric.
• Personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn where required, including facemasks when working with materials that may release airborne particles.
