About this course
Participants will use the V&A’s Renaissance collections as a starting point for developing contemporary sculpture ideas. The course combines research, demonstrations, individual and group tuition, pair work, discussion and experimental studio practice. Learners will design and make two small sculptures: a relief work and a three-dimensional statuette. Sessions cover modelling, mould-making and casting processes, with opportunities to review work and develop ideas through discussion.
What you'll learn
- Apply art-historical sources and references to sculpture projects
- Design and model a clay relief sculpture
- Create a plaster block mould and cast a small relief in pewter
- Construct a wire armature and develop a clay model for a three-dimensional sculpture
- Make a silicone block mould and produce a wax cast
- Work safely with the course materials and processes
Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for learners at all levels, from beginners to those with more experience. Participants should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, demonstrations and health and safety guidance, and take part in individual, pair and group activities.

Before you go
- All materials required for the course are provided.
- Participants should bring a sketchbook, pencils and a pen for sketching and note-taking.
- A camera or smartphone is useful for documenting work in progress.
- Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required. Old clothes or overalls are recommended because some materials may stain or damage fabric.
- Personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn where required.
