Sculpture with Sheet Copper

About this course

Participants develop sheet-copper sculpture through individual projects and short introductory exercises. The course covers hand tools, studio machinery, chasing, repousse, folding and joining methods for creating relief and three-dimensional forms, with colour added using heat or chemicals. Teaching combines group demonstrations, one-to-one guidance, discussions and step-by-step introductions to new techniques. Learners receive regular feedback while experimenting with materials and developing their own projects.

What you'll learn

• Anneal and cut sheet copper using appropriate workshop methods.
• Create relief forms with hammers, chisels, punches and other hand tools.
• Join copper using rivets, soldering, brazing and copper flo.
• Apply colour to copper using heat and chemicals.
• Handle hot materials safely and follow good workshop practice.

The course is designed for complete beginners as well as intermediate learners interested in copper, metal sculpture and art in design. Participation involves developing individual projects alongside group and one-to-one demonstrations, discussions and tutor feedback.

• Complete beginners are explicitly welcomed.

Before you go

• A 400mm square of copper and additional pieces for samples are provided.
• All personal protective equipment is provided.
• Protective clothing, such as overalls or an apron, is recommended.
• Strong shoes or boots are recommended.
• Learners should bring a sketchbook and pencils.
• Help is available with lifting and heavier tool use.
