Searching for the ultimate particle

About this course

The course follows the changing idea of the atom, from early Greek theories and nineteenth-century chemistry to evidence for internal atomic structure and the discovery of quarks. It considers how accelerator experiments revealed many particles before physicists developed simpler explanations based on fundamental particles. The course also examines unanswered questions about the ultimate particle, including possible directions involving string theory and quantum loop gravity. Teaching combines presentations with visual examples, discussion and group work.
