Sewing for beginners: build skills and confidence through practical projects

A beginner-level machine sewing course covering garment construction, finishing techniques and structured projects with demonstrations and guided practice.
About this course
The course develops machine sewing through a sequence of projects, including a tote bag, a kimono-style robe or simple top, and unisex summer trousers. Participants practise seams, seam neatening, bias binding, topstitching, curves, corners, elastic, buttonholes and hems, alongside stitch samples for future reference. Teaching combines demonstrations, handouts, guided exercises and one-to-one feedback. Sessions also cover safe use of a sewing machine and overlocker, selecting needles and threads, using basic presser feet, and following instructions to construct a garment. A personal patchwork project provides an opportunity to apply the techniques covered.
