About this course

Participants develop a garment project using a commercial pattern, with guidance on preparing patterns, laying out fabric for cutting and selecting suitable threads and needles. The course covers construction techniques including seams, sleeves, pockets, facings, sewing and pressing, where relevant to the chosen project. Teaching combines demonstrations, workshop practice, individual guidance and group discussions. Learners create and manage a work plan for their project, with additional tasks potentially set for completion outside class. More experienced participants may work with a level 2 or 3 pattern, adapt a pattern or add embellishment if time allows.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for improvers, learners from previous City Lit sewing courses and beginners with basic sewing experience. Participants need to be able to use a sewing machine. Work centres on an individual garment project, supported by demonstrations, one-to-one guidance and group discussion.

• Beginners are advised to choose a level 1 pattern.
• More experienced learners may choose a level 2 or 3 pattern.
• Learners should be able to take measurements, use numbers and complete simple calculations.
• Additional or extension tasks may be set for completion at home.

Before you go

• Bring a suitable sewing pattern, fabrics, interlinings and haberdashery, checking the pattern requirements.
• Bring a small folder or plastic sleeve for handouts, a bag for work in progress, and a notebook and pen.
• Basic materials and resources will be available as part of the course.
