Sheet Copper and Repoussé Enamelling

About this course

Participants develop individual sheet-copper projects using repoussé to raise relief from the reverse side, then refine surfaces with chasing tools, hammers and chisels. The course also covers making repoussé tools and applying hot enamel to produce coloured, outdoor-durable finishes. Teaching combines step-by-step demonstrations with primarily one-to-one tuition and regular feedback. Group demonstrations cover copper-working techniques and the safe handling of hot materials, supported by handouts on health and safety, techniques and reference material.

Is this course right for you?

The course is open to all levels and explicitly welcomes complete beginners as well as intermediate students. Participants work on individual projects with primarily one-to-one tuition and group demonstrations. The practical work includes hammering and handling hot materials, so learners should be prepared for strong, hand-intensive exercise.

Before you go

• Bring ideas for relief designs, along with a sketchbook and pencils for developing and transferring them to the metal.
• Protective clothing, such as an overall or apron, is recommended.
• Wear covered, sturdy shoes or boots.
• Learners may wish to consider colour when developing enamel designs.
