About this course
The course examines how short stories are constructed, with attention to plot, character, dialogue, structure and point of view. Participants generate ideas, write in class and at home, and develop drafts through revision. Teaching combines practical exercises with close reading of contemporary short fiction. Group discussions and the exchange of constructive criticism help participants assess writing, consider readers’ responses and reflect on different forms and genres of short story.

Is this course right for you?
This course is intended for intermediate writers with some experience of writing fiction who want to concentrate on short stories. It involves producing work both in class and at home, reading contemporary fiction, and sharing writing and feedback in group discussions. A good grasp of written and spoken English is expected.
- Some previous experience of writing fiction is expected
- The course includes homework as well as classroom writing
