Sienese Painting in Egg Tempera

About this course

The course examines the methods and visual qualities of Sienese painting from 13th- to 15th-century Siena, with reference to artists including Duccio, Simone Martini and the Lorenzetti brothers. Participants work through the process step by step, transferring drawings onto a gesso panel and preparing and applying egg tempera by hand. The teaching also considers the graceful line, delicate colour and harmonious composition associated with the tradition. The course concludes with guidance on gilding small painted details.
