About this course
Beginners are introduced to jewellery design and construction through staged demonstrations covering sawing, drilling, soldering, filing, polishing, texturing and shaping metal. The course combines visual explanations, handouts, group discussion and practical work, with individual guidance on suitable techniques for each design. Learners with more experience can develop their own projects with one-to-one technical advice and access to workshop facilities. Progress is considered through questions, discussions, practical work and an assessment record, with handouts and online tutorials supporting study between sessions.
What you'll learn
- Design a jewellery item using techniques appropriate to their level.
- Use a specialist jewellery saw, drill, soldering equipment and files safely and accurately.
- Apply finishing techniques including polishing, texturing and shaping metal.
- Identify suitable techniques for a particular jewellery design or project.
- Complete or refine a jewellery item to an appropriate standard.
Is this course right for you?
The workshop is intended for beginners learning foundational jewellery-making processes, while intermediate and advanced learners can work on projects with individual technical guidance. Participation combines staged practical activity, one-to-one teaching and group discussion.
- Experienced jewellery makers can use the workshop facilities while developing their own projects.
Before you go
- Brass, copper and aluminium are provided.
- Students must bring their own silver; guidance on where to buy it is available in advance.
- Bring a sketchbook, pencil and inspirational material.
- Advanced students should bring their projects and any other materials they want to use.
- Shoes with covered toes are required. Sandals and flip-flops are not permitted.
- Students must read the handouts and safety information as preparation.
