About this course

The course combines vocal warm-ups, breathing work and technical exercises with jazz repertoire study. Learners explore vocal range and flexibility, lyric interpretation, rhythm, phrasing, song arrangements and harmony. Sessions include singing together and presenting songs individually, with listening exercises and constructive feedback. The course also covers maintaining songs in performance, repertoire choice, microphone technique, counting and interpretation. Improvisation is developed alongside continued work on skills introduced in Sing jazz 1.

  • Extend vocal range and flexibility through breathing and technical vocal exercises.
  • Apply rhythm, counting, phrasing, arrangement and harmony when working on jazz songs.
  • Interpret lyrics and make informed choices about song arrangement and performance.
  • Improvise within jazz repertoire and present songs as a soloist.
  • Plan appropriate practice for learning and maintaining repertoire.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for Improver-level singers who are familiar with the jazz idiom and have either completed Sing jazz 1 or undertaken at least six months of similar tuition and training. Participation includes singing with the group, solo presentation, listening to others and giving and receiving constructive criticism.

  • Previous jazz singing tuition or training is expected.
  • The course combines ensemble singing with individual solo presentation.
  • Learners take part in feedback and critical listening activities.

Before you go

  • Music materials are supplied.
  • Learners may be invited to bring their own repertoire copies for the accompanist.
