About this course

The course develops advanced jazz singing through repertoire study, including bebop and vocalese, alongside work on interpretation and arrangement. Sessions combine group vocal warm-ups, technical exercises, demonstrations from the tutor and accompanist, and sample recordings for study. Participants present jazz songs as solos and receive constructive feedback from the tutor and class. Musical development includes ear training, relevant music theory, vocal technique, and scat singing, including using scat as an improvising instrument.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for singers who have completed advanced jazz singing study or can demonstrate equivalent experience and ability at audition. It assumes an established singing technique and a good understanding of jazz and its protocols. Participation involves presenting solos to the class and responding to tutor and peer feedback.

  • Participants are expected to bring songs of their own choice with appropriate charts for the accompanist.
