Sing musical theatre: collective

About this course

Participants learn ensemble numbers from Broadway musicals across different styles, exploring harmony, staging and the techniques used in musical theatre singing. Sessions include physical and vocal warm-ups, singing together and solo, tutor demonstrations and feedback. The course also considers how vocal delivery reflects a song’s style and role within its show. Depending on the group, participants may work on individual solo choices, with an end-of-term showing offering an opportunity to perform selected material.

Is this course right for you?

The course is labelled Intermediate (B1) and is open to singers interested in performing musical theatre, while beginner singers are also welcome. Participants learn through both ensemble and solo singing. Sheet music is used throughout, although familiarity with musical notation is desirable rather than essential, and learners need to follow instructions in English.

Before you go

• The tutor supplies music for the course songs, but participants should bring three copies of any solo song they choose, with the pages securely fastened and arranged for the accompanist.
• A notebook and pencil, folder for music, and recording device may be useful.
