About this course

The workshop combines vocal warm-ups, physical exercises and technique work with musical theatre repertoire. Learners explore vocal qualities and styles, acting through song, audience communication and ways to select repertoire suited to their voices. Teaching includes group singing, individual presentations supported by piano, discussion and feedback on work in progress. Each learner chooses repertoire within a specified topic or period and develops it through class work and practice outside the sessions.

What you'll learn

  • Perform selected musical theatre songs from memory
  • Choose repertoire appropriate to an individual voice
  • Apply vocal techniques suited to different musical theatre styles
  • Recognise the varying vocal demands of musical theatre repertoire
  • Use acting-through-song techniques to communicate with an audience

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for singers and actors with at least three years of singing tuition and a relatively secure technique. Learners should be comfortable singing in front of the class, learning repertoire independently and taking part in discussions in English. A general understanding of musical notation is required, but sight-reading is not.

  • Requires previous singing tuition and established vocal technique
  • Involves individual presentations as well as group singing
  • Learners are expected to practise repertoire at home, with daily practice described as essential
  • Suitable for those able to learn new songs independently without needing to sight-read

Before you go

  • Bring a notebook and pencil.
  • Bring three copies of the sheet music for the chosen repertoire; the tutor will advise on requirements.
  • Learners need to work on their repertoire at home, with daily practice recommended for progress.
