About this course

Sessions combine vocal warm-ups, breathing exercises and song work with musicianship activities that develop aural awareness, rhythm and familiarity with notation. Repertoire may include classical, folk, pop and musical theatre, with harmony introduced in some songs. Teaching moves between whole-group singing, smaller groups, pairs and individual attempts, with and without accompaniment. Participants also explore posture, efficient breathing and basic aspects of how the voice works. Tutor guidance supports practice between sessions, with course materials available through Google Classroom.

What you'll learn

  • Use suitable posture and basic breathing techniques for singing.
  • Explain basic aspects of how the voice works.
  • Demonstrate improved rhythmic and aural awareness.
  • Sing songs and rounds accurately as part of a group.
  • Recognise and use some basic music notation.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for complete beginners and learners with limited singing experience. Participation includes group singing as well as work in smaller groups, pairs and individually. Written and spoken English is used for instructions and class discussions.

  • It is helpful to be able to hear a note and sing it back at the correct pitch, although this is not presented as a formal requirement.
  • Regular practice between sessions is encouraged.

Before you go

  • A notebook, pen or pencil and a folder for organising music and notes are useful.
  • Learners are encouraged to practise daily, with suggested activities provided for work between sessions.
  • Course materials are provided through Google Classroom.
