About this course

Sessions combine vocal warm-ups, technical exercises and breathing work with songs from classical, folk, pop and musical theatre. Learners develop musicianship through aural and rhythmic exercises, music notation and work on songs and rounds. Teaching moves between full-group singing, smaller groups, pairs and individual singing, with regular solo work and occasional harmonising. The course focuses on healthy voice use, posture, projection and singing with or without accompaniment. Learners are encouraged to practise between sessions, with suggested activities to reinforce class work.

What you'll learn

  • Use posture, breathing and vocal techniques that support healthy singing
  • Recognise and reproduce notes at an accurate pitch
  • Improve rhythmic and aural awareness through musicianship exercises
  • Sing songs and rounds accurately as part of a group
  • Read and use basic music notation
  • Perform songs individually with increasing vocal independence

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with some singing experience, while also accommodating near-beginners who want to consolidate fundamental techniques. Participants work as a group, in smaller combinations and individually, and should expect regular solo singing. The source also indicates that learners need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and take part in class discussions.

  • Some experience is expected; complete beginners may not be suited to this level
  • An ability to hear a note and sing it back at the correct pitch is helpful
  • Regular individual singing is part of the class alongside group work

Before you go

  • A notebook, pen or pencil, and a folder for organising music and notes are useful.
  • Learners are encouraged to practise daily between sessions.
  • Course materials are provided through Google Classroom.
