Singing: contemporary commercial music (CCM)

About this course

The course develops vocal technique through breathing and balance, range-building, riffs, vocal agility, vibrato, resonance and formant tuning. Participants explore repertoire from Pop, Rock, Blues, Jazz and Musical Theatre while working on a healthy vocal routine. Teaching combines practical exercises, group music-making, listening and analysis, demonstrations, discussion, online resources and individual practice. Progress is reviewed through ongoing practical activities, with verbal and written feedback. End-of-term concerts provide opportunities to perform the repertoire studied.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for singers at all levels, including beginners and those with more experience. Some previous singing experience is described as beneficial. Participation involves practical activities, group music-making, individual practice and opportunities to perform.

• Some previous singing experience is beneficial, although the course is open to all levels.
• Practice outside class is recommended, but no homework is set.
• Learners receive ongoing feedback and may take part in end-of-term concert performances.

Before you go

• Bring a bottle of water and something to take notes.
• Audio recording is permitted using participants' own devices.
• Video recording and photography are not allowed.
• Learners are expected to complete an Individual Learning Plan.
