Sketching at the National Gallery

About this course

Participants will sketch paintings from different eras and styles, using drawing to observe, research and interpret the National Gallery’s collections. Activities explore pencil techniques, experimental mark-making, light and shadow for creating volume, and introductory approaches to colour. Teaching combines demonstrations, individual guidance, practical sketchbook work, group discussion and reflection on participants’ own drawings. The course includes drawing directly from observation and experimenting with different ways of recording responses to paintings.

Before you go

• Bring an A5 or A4 sketchbook, preferably one that opens flat.
• Bring drawing pencils such as HB, 2B, 3B or 4B, along with an eraser and pencil sharpener.
• Coloured pencils or other dry colour materials, such as felt-tip or pastel pencils, may be brought.
• Wet materials, scissors and craft knives are not permitted in the museum.
