Sketching at the V&A

About this course

Participants sketch objects and artefacts from observation while exploring quick drawing, experimental mark-making, line, tone, pattern, texture, colour, light and shadow. The course also considers volume, form, scale, spatial relationships and sketching as a form of visual research. Practical work in sketchbooks is developed through individual guidance, group discussion, a handout and an itinerary. Learners are encouraged to interpret and reinterpret objects in the collections and reflect on their own work during the course.

The course is intended for beginners, including learners who have not used a sketchbook before. It involves drawing in museum spaces, developing practical work independently and taking part in individual guidance, group discussion and self-reflection.

Before you go

• Bring an A5 or A4 hardback sketchbook, preferably one that opens flat.
• Bring portable drawing materials such as pencils, coloured pencils, felt pens or markers, a rubber, sharpener, biro or fine liner, and other clean, easy-to-use media.
• Wet materials, scissors and craft knives are not allowed in the museum.
