Slip Casting Sculpture Sundays

About this course

Participants work with clay and plaster to create moulds from an original form or suitable studio example, then use those moulds to produce ceramic slip casts. Demonstrations and step-by-step guidance introduce mould making, pouring, de-moulding and finishing techniques, including preparation for kiln firing. The course also covers studio health and safety, with handouts on materials, techniques and reference information. Sessions include discussion and the sharing of knowledge and experience.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for complete beginners as well as more experienced students exploring slip casting as a sculpture technique. Participation involves tutor-guided practical work with clay and plaster, alongside demonstrations, discussion and the exchange of knowledge and experience.

Before you go

• Basic material costs are included.
• Learners may bring their own clay sculpture, preferably still soft, or a suitable simple object. The tutor will advise on suitability, with reference to health and safety.
• Complex or intricate forms may not be suitable for mould making within the course.
• Protective clothing such as an overall or apron is recommended, along with strong shoes or boots.
