Songwriting

About this course

Participants develop songs from initial ideas, exploring four-chord theory, melody construction and lyric writing. The course also uses analysis of songs by artists including James Taylor, Norah Jones and Elton John to examine songwriting techniques and apply them to original work. Teaching combines practical songwriting exercises, tutor feedback and a Personal Learning Plan. Learners have opportunities to share their work, receive constructive criticism and contribute to a class-written song, which is performed at the course’s concluding open mic event.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners as well as aspiring songwriters developing their craft. No previous experience is required. Participation includes songwriting exercises, feedback, collaborative work and contributing to a class performance, with a willingness to learn and an interest in music expected.
