About this course

Participants investigate how sound can occupy and shape space, considering sculptural, interactive and site-specific approaches. The course includes practical workshops, listening assignments, lectures, audiovisual presentations, and both individual and group projects, including the development of a sound installation for a gallery environment. Sessions also cover sound editing and manipulation, research into other artists’ work, and new techniques for ongoing projects. Tutor feedback supports the development of ideas, while historical context is used to examine the impact of sound installations and sound sculptures.

The course is labelled Improver, suggesting it is aimed at learners developing beyond fundamental techniques. Previous composition or music and sound-recording experience is desirable but not essential. Learners work both independently and in groups, with basic computer skills useful for the course.

Before you go

  • Some field-recording exercises take place outside the classroom and require a portable recording device.
  • Learners are strongly encouraged to bring ear plugs because the course may involve high volume levels.
  • Bring a pen and paper for notes and a USB memory stick for saving work.
  • Handouts and materials are provided by the tutor.
