Sound Art: Interactivity with Max/MSP and Arduino

About this course

The course examines how software and hardware can respond to human interaction, using sensors and external MIDI controllers to control Max patches. Participants will explore Max concepts including bangs, messages, floats, integers and symbols, then apply them in individual projects such as bespoke instruments, installations and sculptures. Teaching combines practical workshops with discussions of listening assignments, lectures and audio-visual presentations. Contextual study of existing sound-art works informs participants’ own ideas, alongside opportunities to develop critical approaches to their projects.

Is this course right for you?

This improver-level course is intended for learners developing beyond fundamental computer skills and exploring sound art through individual projects. Some experience with Apple computers or computer programming would be advantageous, although support is available during class.

• Participants work on individual projects as well as taking part in workshops and class discussions.
• Basic computer skills, including file management, are relevant to the course.

Before you go

• Bring pen and paper for notes and a USB memory stick for saving work.
• Max software is available as a free trial for Mac and Windows computers and can be downloaded at home.
• Handouts and materials are provided by the tutor.
