About this course

The course examines the history and terminology of soundscape composition, including how space, place and location influence recorded sound. Participants listen to audio examples and consider different ways soundscape work can be presented. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations, explanations and practical exercises in class and outside it. Participants also use software to organise recordings, create compositions, and apply effects and processing to sounds.

  • Basic computer and file-management skills are relevant to the course
  • Some experience using Apple computers may be helpful, although support is available in class
  • Practical work takes place both in class and outside class

Before you go

  • Access to a computer outside class is required.
  • Access to recording devices and software outside class is recommended.
  • Bring a pen and paper, a USB memory stick and, if available, a portable recorder.
  • Handouts and materials are provided by the tutor.
  • Exposure to high volume levels is possible; bringing ear plugs to each lesson is strongly encouraged.
