What Beginner (A1) Spanish means

At A1 Spanish, learners are beginning to use familiar words and simple sentences in predictable everyday situations.

  • Introduce yourself

Me llamo Ana. Vivo en Londres.

My name is Ana. I live in London.

  • Order in a café

    Quisiera un café, por favor.

I would like a coffee, please.

  • Ask for directions

    Perdone, ¿dónde está la estación?

Excuse me, where is the station?

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The workshop uses two Spanish-speaking figures as a context for practising basic language, including introductions, professions, nationalities, activities, physical descriptions and family. Learners work with the present tense, numbers and adjectives while developing their understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures. Teaching is mainly presentation-based, with recommended student participation and spoken interaction. Short written texts, simple audio material, presentations and handouts support practice in reading and listening as well as spoken Spanish.

  • Ask and answer questions about people, including their activities and characteristics
  • Use the present tense, numbers and adjectives in beginner-level communication
