What Intermediate (B1) Spanish means

At B1 Spanish, learners can deal with most everyday situations and explain experiences, opinions and plans in connected language.

  • Express an opinion

Creo que trabajar desde casa es útil, aunque a veces puede resultar solitario.

I think working from home is useful, although it can sometimes feel lonely.

  • Explain a plan

Quiero mejorar mi español para poder trabajar en el extranjero el próximo año.

I want to improve my Spanish so I can work abroad next year.

  • Tell a short story

Íbamos hacia la playa cuando empezó a llover, así que cambiamos de planes.

We were heading to the beach when it started raining, so we changed our plans.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course develops Spanish for situations where learners need to explain ideas, discuss problems, make suggestions and respond to others. Practice covers longer, less predictable conversations in social and workplace contexts, with work on using present, past and future tenses more consistently. Learners are also introduced to the presente de subjuntivo in common expressions such as “es importante que” and “quiero que”. Discussion of media, everyday life and cultural experiences provides context for communicating appropriately across Spanish-speaking cultures.

What you'll learn

  • Manage longer conversations in social and workplace situations.
  • Use present, past and future tenses with increasing control.
  • Apply the presente de subjuntivo in basic common contexts.
  • Give suggestions and recommendations, and express needs clearly.

Is this course right for you?

Listed at Intermediate (B1), the course is intended for learners developing beyond basic Spanish communication. Participation involves handling extended conversations, responding to others and discussing everyday, workplace and cultural topics, including situations that are less predictable.
