What Beginner (A1) Spanish means

At A1 Spanish, learners are beginning to use familiar words and simple sentences in predictable everyday situations.

  • Introduce yourself

Me llamo Ana. Vivo en Londres.

My name is Ana. I live in London.

  • Order in a café

    Quisiera un café, por favor.

I would like a coffee, please.

  • Ask for directions

    Perdone, ¿dónde está la estación?

Excuse me, where is the station?

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course develops spoken Spanish for travel and everyday holiday situations. Learners practise introducing themselves, handling numbers and prices, ordering in cafés, shopping, asking for directions, using hotels and transport, telling the time, and seeking help at a chemist or doctor. Cultural topics include customs such as tipping and paying in cafés. Teaching centres on spoken interaction, with pair and group work, role plays and games supported by presentations, hand-outs and audio-visual material.

What you'll learn

  • Use greetings, farewells and simple personal introductions.
  • Handle basic transactions, including buying items, asking about prices and ordering food and drinks.
  • Ask for and understand basic directions, times and travel information.
  • Use numbers and deal with hotel enquiries, tickets, departures, arrivals, delays and platforms.
  • Describe common symptoms when seeking assistance at a chemist or doctor.
  • Recognise selected cultural practices relevant to travelling in Spanish-speaking contexts.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners, with no previous Spanish knowledge required. Learners should expect a communicative format involving pair work, group activities, role plays and games rather than solely individual study.

  • Homework is highly recommended to reinforce learning outside class.
