About this course

The workshop focuses on controlling a speedlite away from the camera for portrait photography. Participants examine flashgun power, settings, capacity and exposure modes, then apply camera metering and manual controls during practical sessions indoors and outdoors with a model. The course also covers flash triggers, stands, shapers and modifiers, including the construction of budget modifiers. Participants explore composition, posing, communication and direction, as well as lighting setups such as low key and high key. Teaching takes place in a small group.

What you'll learn

  • Explain the main features, settings, power controls and exposure modes of a speedlite.
  • Apply manual camera settings, light-meter readings and metering modes when working with flash.
  • Use speedlite accessories including triggers, stands, shapers and modifiers.
  • Construct budget shapers and modifiers for flash photography.
  • Direct and photograph a model using considered composition, posing and communication.
  • Create low-key and high-key lighting setups with off-camera speedlites.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for improver-level portrait photographers developing beyond fundamental camera techniques. A good understanding of basic exposure and confidence using manual camera settings are strongly advised. Participation includes practical work indoors and outdoors with a model, in a small group.

  • Novice photographers may benefit from taking a beginner course first.
  • The course involves practical portrait sessions with a model.
  • Participants work in a group limited to eight students.

Before you go

  • A mirrorless, DSLR or compact camera with full manual controls is required; the provider can provide a camera if needed.
  • A tripod is recommended if owned, and the provider can provide one where necessary.
  • A speedlite or external flash is optional if owned rather than essential to bring.
  • Participants are advised to bring their camera manual, a fully charged battery and an empty memory card.
  • Comfortable shoes are recommended.
