About this course

The course introduces abstraction through a short illustrated talk and a series of painting projects. Participants explore line, tone, colour, texture and gestural mark-making, using starting points such as music, found imagery and marks themselves. Teaching combines direct, expressive painting with more structured approaches, including building compositions in layers and dividing the picture surface. Colour mixing, colour interaction and varied paint application are covered alongside opportunities to discuss ideas as a group.

What you'll learn

  • Explore three different starting points for developing an abstract painting
  • Use point, line, shape and tone to investigate visual rhythm
  • Mix and adjust primary and secondary colours selectively
  • Apply paint with varied tools, marks and consistencies
  • Construct an abstract composition using surface divisions and layered techniques
