About this course

This course uses still life arrangements, from everyday objects to more intricate set-ups, to examine shape, proportion, light, surface texture and composition. Participants work across graphite, charcoal, ink and watercolour, with exercises in tonal contrast, colour theory, realistic mixing and brushwork. They build a sketchbook of studies while exploring how placement, spacing and angles affect balance and visual meaning. Individual guidance is provided, leading to a final drawing or painting that brings together the techniques explored.

What you'll learn

  • Observe and record shape, proportion, light and surface detail with greater precision
  • Apply tonal contrast, highlights and shadows to suggest volume and depth
  • Compose still life arrangements using object placement, spacing and angles
  • Experiment with graphite, charcoal, ink and watercolour
  • Mix realistic and expressive colours and practise controlled brushwork
  • Produce a series of sketchbook studies and a finished drawing or painting
