About this course

The course introduces basic stone-carving skills and studio health and safety before participants develop individual projects with tutor guidance. Projects may be abstract or figurative sculpture, lettering or functional objects, with ideas developed in clay before carving in different types of stone. Teaching combines mainly one-to-one tuition with demonstrations, group discussions and individual feedback. The course also covers flat, concave and convex surfaces, awareness of historical and contemporary stone sculpture, and the maintenance of tools and equipment.

Suitable for beginners and returning students, the course combines individual project work with one-to-one tuition, demonstrations, group discussions and feedback. Learners may pursue abstract, figurative, lettering or functional-object projects. No previous stone-carving experience is required.

  • Some lifting is involved, with help available.
  • The class is wheelchair accessible.

Before you go

  • Wear stout hard shoes and bring an apron suitable for dusty work.
  • Bring a pencil or charcoal and a sketchbook.
  • Basic materials are included, with further materials charged at cost after a £5 allowance.
