About this course

The course examines street photography’s history, contemporary approaches and the work of influential practitioners, with examples in colour and black and white. Participants explore candid photography in public, including legal and ethical considerations, narrative, composition and the use of shadows, reflections and silhouettes in uncontrolled light. Teaching combines talks, demonstrations, handouts, practical exercises and location shoots. Online classroom activities support image sharing and group discussion, while independent practice is encouraged between classes.

What you'll learn

  • Explain key developments in street photography and relate them to the work of established practitioners
  • Apply quick, reflexive techniques when photographing people and urban life in public spaces
  • Use composition and narrative to communicate an idea through a single image
  • Assess available light using shadows, reflections and silhouettes
  • Explain relevant legal considerations when taking photographs in public
  • Produce a small portfolio of street photography images
