About this course

The course examines how natural and available light, location and spontaneous moments can shape street photographs. Learners practise candid photography, approach the challenge of photographing strangers, and use environments to construct visual narratives through single images and sequenced photo-essays. Sessions also consider ambiguity, intention and developing a personal perspective rather than reproducing existing approaches. Learners produce a small body of work and discuss how it might be developed into a portfolio.

What you'll learn

  • Use natural and available light in street photography
  • Apply techniques for capturing candid photographs and spontaneous moments
  • Construct visual narratives through single images and sequenced photo-essays
  • Explore ambiguity and intention when shaping photographs for viewers
  • Develop a body of work reflecting a personal perspective

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for improver-level photographers who want greater direction in their street photography and are developing an individual approach. Learners should already be able to operate a DSLR or mirrorless camera using manual settings. Practical exercises involve working in street environments and photographing strangers.

  • Designed for photographers moving beyond basic camera operation
  • Requires participation in practical street photography exercises
  • Includes photographing people encountered in public settings

Before you go

  • Learners need a camera and should know how to use a DSLR or mirrorless camera on manual settings.
  • Film cameras are permitted, but learners must also use a digital camera so their work is available for discussion on the final day.
