About this course

The course focuses on playing with other orchestral string instruments in a small ensemble, using repertoire from different musical styles. Sessions combine full-ensemble playing with work in instrument sections. The tutor conducts and teaches, explaining and demonstrating technical and musical aspects of the repertoire. Participants develop ensemble coordination by listening to one another, following the conductor and maintaining their own musical part while matching the group’s bowing, articulation and dynamics. Written and verbal guidance is used throughout, with opportunities to practise parts between sessions.

What you'll learn

  • Play in tune and in time with other musicians by listening and following a conductor
  • Maintain an individual part within an ensemble
  • Coordinate bowing styles, articulation and dynamics with the wider group
