About this course

This practical studio workshop examines how flash, modifiers, backgrounds and props affect portrait lighting. Participants analyse lighting looks associated with well-known photographers, then use a model to observe and adjust the position and quality of light. The course covers soft and hard lighting, one-, two- and three-light setups, coloured gels, and techniques including Rembrandt, clamshell, butterfly, high-key and low-key lighting. Participants trial different approaches with studio equipment and create a selection of portrait work.

What you'll learn

  • Apply studio flash techniques to portrait photography
  • Use softboxes, beauty dishes, umbrellas, snoots and reflectors to modify light
  • Set up one-, two- and three-light arrangements
  • Use Rembrandt, clamshell, butterfly, high-key and low-key lighting techniques
  • Position a subject in relation to studio lights, backgrounds and props

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for improver-level photographers working in a practical studio setting with a model. A good understanding of basic exposure and confidence using a camera’s manual settings are strongly advised, so it may suit learners developing beyond fundamental camera controls.

  • Participation involves hands-on work with studio flash equipment and lighting setups
  • Learners work with a model during the practical exercises

Before you go

  • Lighting equipment, props and backgrounds are provided.
  • Bring a mirrorless, DSLR or compact camera with full manual controls. A camera can be borrowed if needed.
  • A camera manual, fully charged battery and empty memory card are recommended.
  • Comfortable shoes are recommended.
  • An external flash may be brought if owned.
