About this course
The course examines Donatello’s evolving style, his study of ancient Roman sculpture and his work for civic, religious and private patrons in Florence, Siena and Padua. It considers major contributions including the equestrian monument, the free-standing bronze nude and the portrait bust. Slide presentations and group discussion introduce techniques such as wood and marble carving, bronze casting and rilievo schiacciato. The course also explores how Donatello used different media and how his ideas influenced artists including Masaccio, Michelangelo, Mantegna and Riccio.

Is this course right for you?
The course is suitable for learners at all levels of prior study. Participants should be able to follow simple written and spoken instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. Teaching includes group discussion, so learners will be invited to contribute to shared consideration of Donatello’s work.
