Study day: Renoir and Impressionism

About this course

The course examines how Impressionism developed, challenged established artistic traditions and contributed to modernist practice. It considers the movement’s artistic and social context, including the influence of photography and Japanese prints. The second part focuses on Renoir, using analysis of selected paintings to explore his subject matter, materials, techniques and changing formal approach. Teaching combines lectures, slide presentations and group discussion, with attention to the progression of his work and his contribution to Impressionism.
