Study day: Rothko, Pollock and Abstract Expressionism

About this course

This course examines the development of Abstract Expressionism within international modernist painting, linking artists’ work to biography, politics, social history and theoretical ideas associated with Clement Greenberg. Particular attention is given to Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, including comparisons between Action Painting and Colourfield Painting through analysis of works such as Full Fathom Five and the Seagram Murals. Teaching combines lectures, slide presentations and group discussion. Topics include the influence of Expressionism and Surrealism, material experimentation, artists’ motivations, and changing interpretations of the movement.
